INTRODUCTION

PREAMBLE

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree programme of the University of Nairobi prepares undergraduate student careers in business management both in public and private sectors. Since its inception in 1964, the programme has offered business and management education to a broad spectrum of students from the Eastern region and beyond. The School of Business under which the programme falls has been in existence since 1956 making it one of the first schools of the University of Nairobi.

To improve on its utility, the programme has been and will continue to be realigned to be consistent with the changing needs of society. It has also developed from a programme of three options into the present six distinct options:-

The programme is offered on both full time (Module I), part time (Module II) and Distance Learning (Module III). The Module II programmes are designed to accommodate the special needs of those in full time employment and other demands. To prepare students for advancement in their fields of specialization.

To instill problems – solving attitude and business ethics in the practices of management.

To inculcate entrepreneurial and self-reliance attitudes and habits in students so that they may be active participants in the creation of new wealth.

APPROACH

The B.Com programme is both academic and practical in its orientation. The teaching methods applied include lectures, tutorials, assignments, class discussion, case analysis and research. Students are evaluated on the basis of class attendance and participation. Performance in assignments, tests and in final examinations done at the end of each semester. Links with business community, industry and other business schools provide an important component.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (FOR BOTH MODULE II&III)

Admission will be on the basis of academic qualification and more specifically will be governed by anyone of the following senate approved regulations

1.The common regulations of the Bachelor s degree for the University of Nairobi shall be applicable.

2.Holder of KCSE Certificate with a Minimum aggregate C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili.

3.Holder of KACE Certificate with a minimum of two principals.

4.Passes and a minimum of a credit pass in Mathematics at KCE.

5.Holder of a Degree from a recognized University.

6.Holder of a Diploma from a recognized Institution with an overall grade of not less than CREDIT and minimum aggregate of C at KCSE or O-Level Division JII.

7.Holder of CPA/CPS Part II or equivalent professional O-Level Division JII.

8.Holder of qualifications deemed to the equivalent to any of the Above.

* Mode of learning. Form 5.30pm to 8.30pm on weekdays and from800am to 5.00pm on Saturdays.

PROGRAMME DURATION AND STRUCTURE. (MODULE ll)

The B.Com programme will run for a minimum of (8) semesters and a maximum of twenty four semesters from the date of registration. One calendar has three (3) semesters and each semester has fifteen weeks. Admission will be at the beginning of a semester. B.Com University Of Nairobi UoNBI

NOTE:

a)Registration for levels III and IV (Part II) requires successful completion of all levels, I, II and common course units (Part I).

b)A student may take any course unit offered by an option as their elective as long as he/she meets the relevant prerequisite.

c)Each course unit in the programme has a minimum loading of 45 hours.

d)A student may take any course unit offered in other faculties / schools / institutes of the University of Nairobi in addition to the required course units in the School of Business. Such a course unit will appear in the candidate’s transcript but shall not contribute to the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce.

DISTANCE MODE OF STUDY (MODULE III)

The programme will run for a minimum of eight semesters of 24 weeks each and a maximum of 16 semesters from the date of registration. The minimum semester load shall be three units and the maximum shall be six course units.

Each course unit in the programme has a loading of a minimum of 70 hours. The programme is organized into two parts: Part I consisting

of year / level I and year / level II: and Part II consisting of year / level III and year / level IV. The course units are divided into common, core, specialization and elective course units.

EXAMINATIONS

All course units will be examined during the semester which they are taken. The examination shall comprise of continuous assessment and final examination.

The Bachelor of Commerce degree certificate is inscribed either in Accounting Option, Human Resource Management Option, Insurance Option, Marketing Option. Procurement and Supply Chain Management option, Operations Management option or Business Information Systems option.

EXEMPTIONS AND CREDIT TRANSFERS (FOR BOTH MODULE II & III)

Exemptions shall only be allowed in levels I and II (part l)

Applicants who have completed course units equivalent to those offered in the Bcom programme at degree or equivalent lever from

recognized Universities or institutions may be exempted for those units but only after passing exemption examinations and/or interviews

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

Application forms are available at the University of Nairobi, Main Campus Gandhi wing Room G3 at a non-refundable fee of Kshs. 3,000

VENUE

Classes for module II students will be at the Main/Bandari /Mombasa and Kisumu Campuses of the University of Nairobi. The lecture

hours will be between 5.30pm ¬8.30pm during weekdays and 8.00am –

5.00pm on Saturdays. Module I run during weekdays from 8.00am at 5.00pm. While Module II day is currently being offered at the

Uniplaza bldg. Mombasa and Lower Kabete Campus. Classes run between 8.00am ¬5.00pm during weekdays.
