About
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of the composition, properties and reactions of matter. Studies in chemistry range from the bulk behaviour of matter, down to the interactions of its atoms and molecules. Chemistry is a central discipline whose interfaces range from physics to computers to biology to medicine, drugs, nanotechnology, new materials, and the environment. It is true to say that almost every facet of life is dependent on chemical processes of one form or another. Chemical reactions have been harnessed by man to produce a wide variety of substances that our daily lives are dependent on, e.g., synthetic materials, pharmaceuticals, plastics, paints, dyes, metals and alloys, some of which display the most remarkable properties. Chemical processes such as combustion are the source of power for transport and electricity generation. Modern-day life would be difficult to imagine without its vast array of chemical products.
But, most importantly, it is just so fascinating! If you want to understand the workings of the world around you – then chemistry is for you!
Why study chemistry?
Kenya’s mineral profile is steadily increasing and hence there is a demand for chemists in the mining industry. Career opportunities also exist in the fine chemical, pharmaceutical, food and catalytic converter industries. Further careers in chemistry are teaching and research. In line with vision 2030, the economic pillar, depends on creation of industries so that Kenya can transform itself into a middle income earning nation. Chemistry plays a key role with its numerous chemical industries and Kenya has a great potential in the chemical industry. The recent discovery of oil and coal will be raw material for the petrochemical industry which so far is the largest chemical industry in the world.
The study of chemistry involves investigation, observation, measurement, critical thinking, problem solving and scientific reasoning. Practical laboratory work and theoretical studies form essential parts of chemistry programmes.Chemistry, being a central science, is studied together with other science subjects.
DeKUT Department of Chemistry Courses Offered
Programmes
To study for a Degree you need:
i)KCSE applicants:
a) Aggregate Grade C+ and :Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics
b) C + in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology
c) C + in Mathematics, Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences.
ii)Have a minimum of 2 Principal Passes In Science Subjects In K.A.C.E in of which one must be Chemistry
iii)Have a Diploma in Industrial Chemistry or any other relevant field of chemistry with at least a credit pass from an institution recognized by the University Senate
iv) Have any other qualifications accepted by The University Senate as equivalent to the above. Credit waiver will be considered based on the qualification of the student
