Currently, Kabarak University School of Health Sciences offers BSc. Nursing at the Main Campus. The program in the school is founded on Christian virtues which equip one with Godly values in nursing practice. The nursing program challenges its students to become exceptionally compassionate, caring and competent nurse leaders who impact and transform their world and health care in general through uniqueness of Christ inspired nursing practice.

Nursing profession plays a vital role in the provision of these health care services in this country. Nurses are the backbone of the delivery of health services in this country and particularly more so in the county where they are found in all the levels. Nursing has taken great strides and continues to make great effort to contribute towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and the Vision 2030. Therefore education at high level (BSc. Nursing, Masters and Doctoral) is paramount because competent nurses need to be prepared to take the new responsibilities at all levels- National (counties) and International levels

Department of nursing offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing with core modules in areas such as Medical-Surgical Nursing, Community Health, Midwifery and pediatric nursing, Mental-health and psychiatric, nursing leadership and management, nursing education and research . Students also have an opportunity to explore on specialized units of nursing during their last academic year. Specialized units include oncology nursing, forensic nursing, palliative nursing, ethical & legal issues in nursing, environmental and occupational health, gender and health and finally entrepreneurship. Nursing students are also attached to the communities and teaching institutions to gain community and teaching experiences respectively. During the year of training, students are also expected to prepare dissertation and elective projects in areas of their interest or choice

Minimum Admission Requirements

All applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing must satisfy the following requirements:
A mean grade of at least C+ (C plus) in K.C.S.E. with a minimum of C+ in the following subjects:
Chemistry or physical science
Biology or Biological Science
English or Kiswahili
Physics or Mathematics

Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine and Community Health

The 4-year degree program has been designed to recognize that its graduates will have an advanced training in basic sciences, clinical and community health in order to provide health care that will integrate curative and preventive health care. This program will also give an opportunity for the practicing Clinical Officers to upgrade their education and skills while opening avenues for the graduates to advance in postgraduate and research areas. The core modules in this program include Paediatrics, Reproductive health, Minor Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Community Health. Specialised units include ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental health, Oncology and Dermatology.

Minimum Admission Requirements

All applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine must satisfy the following requirements:

  • A mean grade of C+ (C plus) in K.C.S.E with a minimum in the following subjects: Chemistry or Physical science, Physics or Mathematics, Biology or Biological Sciences, English or Kiswahili
  • OR At least 2 principle pass in Biology, Chemistry and a subsidiary pass in either Mathematics or Physical sciences at the advance level or its equivalent as determined by the University Senate.
  • OR Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution approved by the University Senate. Holders of Clinical Medicine and Surgery will be eligible for credit transfer for up to 30% as will be approved by the Senate in the first and second year courses only.
  • OR Degree in Medical Sciences: A minimum O level division II or C+ Mean grade and a credit pass C+ in the cluster subjects in K.C.S.E in addition to a credit pass in the subsequent professional qualifications from a recognized medical training institution.

Masters of Medicine in Family Medicine

Kabarak University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, established in 2014, offers an innovative curriculum in the Master of Medicine in Family Medicine degree (MMED FM). The diverse instructional methods, based on a learner-centred approach, will prepare you for the primary roles of a Family Physician: Primary care team consultant, leader, communicator, teachers, scholar and health advocate. Our MMED FM curriculum is built on Christian principles to disciple believers – equipping you for competent, compassionate, whole person care particularly among under-resourced contexts in East Africa and beyond.

Teaching Hospitals

The University will utilize signed Memorandae of Understanding with relevant institutions for effective implementation of the program. The initial primary teaching hospitals that are affiliated with Kabarak University are:

  • AIC Kijabe Hospital
  • PCEA Chogoria Hospital
  • Tenwek Hospital

MMED FM Course Structure

Part I is slightly less than two years in duration and involves an opening four months of block courses taken at KABU. These cover the Art of Family Medicine, its self-understanding and goals as a consultant to the primary health care team; adult learning principles and evidence-based medicine; preparation for research; understanding health care law in Kenya; a Christian view of healing and care and ethics within a Christian framework.
You will then move to your matched mission Teaching Hospital (Tenwek, Kijabe or PCEA Chogoria) for the core clinical rotations in IM, Paediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, and Surgery including Orthopaedics. Some sub-specialty rotations may be completed at an alternative Part I teaching hospitals to the one to which you have been matched. Part II of the program is the final two years and involves mental health training, health systems, comprehensive, continuity of care of your own patient panel including working with a community health center. It will include rotations at a county hospital and a cross-cultural (preferably out of country) setting. Besides generous elective time, there is protected non-clinical time for thesis research and writing.

Minimum Admission Requirements

In addition to the minimum entry requirements specified for Masters Degree at Kabarak University, you must meet the following conditions to be eligible for admissions to MMED FM:

  • A holder of the M.B.Ch.B. degree or equivalent from institutions recognized by Kabarak University Senate and Commission on University Education
  • Registered or registerable as a medical practitioner by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board of Kenya (MPDB) (you have completed or are in the process of completing the internship programme*)
  • Pass admission requirements and interviews as determined by the Department of Family Medicine and Community Care

NBPrior service of three years with the Ministry of Health is not required.

Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Health

Minimum Admission Requirements

All applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Mean grade of C+
  • C+ in Chemistry
  • C+ in Biology
  • C+ in English OR Kiswahili
  • C+ in Mathematics OR Physics

DIPLOMA IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Minimum Admission Requirements

All applicants for admission to the Diploma In Environmental Health must satisfy the following requirements.

  • Mean grade of C
  • C in Biology
  • C in English OR Kiswahili
  • C- in Chemistry
  • C- in Home Science OR Agriculture
  • C- in Building Construction OR Technical Construction
  • C- in Mathematics OR Physics
  • ORCertificate in Environmental Health / Community Health

Bachelor Of Sciences In Human Nutrition and Dietetics

Minimum Admission Requirements

All applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Mean grade of C+

Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics
