About Kenya Medical Training College Lodwar Campus
Overview
The idea of building Kenya Medical Training College in Lodwar was born in 1984 when the then president of Kenya (Retired) Hon. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi visited Turkana for the first time. He found that there were no local nurses in Lodwar District Hospital currently called the Lodwar County and Referral Hospital. He decreed that a Medical Training College must be constructed to train more locals. These students would also contribute to the improved care of patients in the hospital.
In addition, the county’s socio, economic, cultural climatic and geographical uniqueness prompted the construction of the college. For this reason, it was further decided that the predominantly nomadic pastoralist community would benefit from outreach services provided by the students and the qualified medical personnel.
The college was constructed fourteen (14) years later in 1998. It was completed in 2000 and officially opened in October of the same year by the then KMTC Director Mr. Paul Boit in the company of other County Dignitaries.
Its first class was Certificate in Community Health Nursing which commenced in September the same year with a student population of 34 students.
From this early beginning MTC Lodwar has continued to progress and make a remarkable difference in not only the County’s health sector but also the country at large
