About Kisumu Polytechnic Entrepreneurship Education Department

History
The Entrepreneurship Department was established in 1995 as the ninth department of the Kisumu National Polytechnic under the leadership of Mr. James Ongwae whose successors included Moses Hoanga, Ochieng Ojwang’, Agrippa Onguka, Abuka Ajuoga and presently Samuel Oballah who has been in office since 2012.
Its mandate was to service other departments, across the board, in terms of teaching entrepreneurship education to the students of the institution. In 2006, administration expanded the role of the department to include research and facilitation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) development involving the wider community in the region.

To enhance entrepreneurship culture and development through training, innovation and incubation
Objectives

  1. To provide the knowledge, skills and attitude for self-employment – as an alternative career to salaried employment – through entrepreneurship education and training.
  2. To develop and implement sector-specific, tailor-made training programs that enhance performance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) entrepreneurs
  3. To enhance performance of MSMEs through training, in collaboration with other partners and stake holders

  • Polytechnic Trainees
  • Potential entrepreneurs – Youth, Women, and the physically challenged
  • MSMEs managers and
  • Company employees

Kisumu Polytechnic Entrepreneurship Education Department Courses Offered

The department collaborates with other partners and stakeholders (Commercial banks, Micro-finance institutions and Government agencies) for enhanced and efficient delivery of entrepreneurship modules to beneficiaries including business managers and employees besides polytechnic trainees.
Courses Offered
All our programs comply with the following conditions;

  • All programs may take one of the following approaches
  • 2 year regular programme
  • 2 year weekend and holiday programme or
  • 2 year part-time/ evening programme
  • Entry Requirements for all courses are relevant the KNEC craft certificate or C- or above in KCSE (except Certificate in Project Management and Higher Diploma in Entrepreneurship Development)
  • The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) administers all the exams

The courses include;

  1. Certificate in Project Management

Entry Requirements: D+ or above in KCSE 

  1. Diploma in Project Management
  2. Diploma in Entrepreneurship Development
  3. Diploma in Cooperative Management
  4. Higher Diploma in Entrepreneurship Development

Entry Requirements

  1. Diploma from recognized training institution
  2. Minimum of three years experience in teaching or working in industry
