This course seeks to familiarize students with the basic concepts and structure of criminology. The course will take students through the various stages of criminal thought from a look at the trends in crime to drugs and society, violent offenses and what role, if any, the community has in preventing crime. The course will also examine the nature of international crime particularly as it relates to Ireland and in this context will discuss the Criminal Assets Bureau and others outside the jurisdiction.

Course Aims & Objectives

The aim of this programme is to equip students with the basic information to gain an understanding of criminology, street crime, aggravated crime and terrorism, both causes and prevention, to include state versus paramilitary terrorism. The course will examine in detail a range of criminal activity together with detection and prevention methods in common use today.

DIC 6203:       Communication skills and Information Communication Technology
DIC 6204:       Rural and urban Criminology
DIC 6205:       Social Statistics
DIC 6206:       Research methods in criminology

SEMESTER 2

DIC 6207:       Introduction to collective behaviour
DIC 6208:       Theories of Penology
DIC 6209:       Criminal Justice system
DIC 6210:       Psychological counseling
DIC 6211:       Introduction to law, society & social order
DIC 6212:       Social rehabilitation and reintegration

SEMESTER 3

DIC 6213:      Community policing
DIC 6214:       Terrorism
DIC 6215:       Entrepreneurship
DIC 6216:       Criminal Justice and Psychology
DIC 6217:       Drug and substance abuse
DIC 6218:       Project

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum qualifications are KCSE C- or KCE Div. 2 or the equivalent
  • Certificate in Project management, Social development, Social work or Community development
  • Course open to beginners, Development facilitators, Project managers and Fresh students
