About KMTC Department of Clinical Medicine

The history of Clinical Medicine training is a long one dating back to 1925 with the admission of students who would later become Clinical Officers (Cos) after their successful training.
Over the years, the course has grown to include various areas of technical expertise for clinical officers.
After graduation, our students are licensed by the Clinical Officers Council. They are therefore licensed practitioners of medicine who are trained and authorized to perform general or specialized medical duties such as diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury, ordering and interpreting medical tests, performing routine medical and surgical procedures and referring patients to other practitioners.
A clinical officer usually oversees a health center or a district hospital and is part of the medical team in bigger hospitals where one may head a department or work under a senior clinical officer or a physician. Clinical officer is legally recognized as a fully qualified medical practitioner who provides routine care in general medicine or within a medical specialty such as anesthesia and carries out treatment that is outside the nurses’ scope.
