About KMTC Department of Community Oral Health

The department of Community Oral Health (COH) trains Community Health Workers (COHO) who are based at district and provincial hospitals to give basic dental care to Kenyans.
These health workers submit reports that help to inform policy as they form a link between the community and decision makers.
The department was established at KMTC since 1948 through a presidential decree. The ever rising demand for oral care necessitated the establishment of the department as the few available oral health professionals could not meet the demand.
The department is anchored on the belief that common dental diseases can be prevented through educating communities on good oral hygiene practice and dietary counselling.
The program’s overall goals are to increase coverage of promotive and preventive services to the majority of Kenyans. In addition the program aims to help prevent an increase in dental diseases through good oral health practices.
