Laikipia University Institute Of Arid Lands Management – Details:

Overview

The Institute of Arid Lands Management was founded initially as a Faculty in June 2012 as a Kenyan Vision 2030 flagship of Laikipia University. The arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) occupy 80 percent of Kenya’s total land surface. Despite their fragile nature, ASALs serve as important biodiversity reservoirs, wildlife habitat, and a resource for livestock production, various minerals, renewable energy and landscape of great attraction. Sustained productivity from these ASAL ecosystems is needed for economic and social development of the country in line with Vision 2030.

The University, through Best Practice and appropriate technology, is endeavouring to transform communities by excelling in environmental conservation and sustainable utilization of ASALs resources. Consequently, the Institute of Arid Lands has developed a Bachelor of Science in Utilization and Sustainability of Arid Lands, and is scheduled to admit its first students in September 2013. The programme is intended to produce specialists in range resource management and dryland farming. The development of a Diploma programme in Utilization and Sustainability of Arid Lands is at an advanced stage and should admit students by 2014. There are also plans to introduce more programmes that will address the social and economic needs of communities in the ASALs.
