MASTER OF LAWS
The Master of Laws (LL.M.) course is designed for students who are interested in gaining further skills and specializing in specific areas of laws (LL.B.) degree to delve into and develop expertise in emerging areas of law at the national, regional and international levels.
Admission Requirements
The common Regulations for the Masters degree in all Faculties, Institutes and Schools applies. Categories of persons to whom admission is open include:
Holder of an LL.B degree with a minimum of Upper Second Class Honours from the University of Nairobi.
Graduates of any other University whose degrees have been accepted by the University of Nairobi Senate to be equivalent to the Bachelor of Laws degree at Upper Second Class Honours.
Holders of a Bachelors of Laws Degree of the University of Nairobi or its accepted equivalent who have achieved a Lower Second Class Honours and have satisfied Senate that they posses academic qualifications equivalent to Upper Second Class Honours through:

  1. At least two years of work or relevant experience:
  2. Relevant research and publications: or
  3. Attainment of a postgraduate diploma in Law from a recognized academic institution.

 
Thematic Areas
A student can specialize in any of the following thematic areas:

  • Law, Government and Democracy
  • Public Finance and Financial Services Law
  • International Trade and Investments Law
  • Law and Society
  • Gender and the Law
  • Public International Law
  • Environment and Natural Resources Law
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Law, Science and Technology
  • Corporate Governance and the Law

 
Note: The availability of thematic areas is subject to a number of factors including having a minimum number of students enrolling in the thematic area.
 
Award of the Degree
Candidates who satisfy the Senate in the prescribed LL.M. examinations are awarded Master of Laws degree of the University of Nairobi in the thematic area in which they have been trained, examined and qualified.

Structure and duration
The LL.M programme consists of coursework, end of semester examinations and a project report. Teaching methods include lectures and seminars and group presentations. The programme is mounted for a minimum of three and a maximum of ten semesters of fifteen weeks each. Candidates are required to take a total of nine course units, carry out research and write a project report.
