Requirements
A mean grade of C+ in KCSE (or its equivalent) with C+ in each of the teaching subjects or 5 Credits for IGCSE holders or a minimum of 24 out of 45 points for International Baccalureate (IB) holders or 2 Principal passes and one subsidiary pass for A Level holders.
Philosophy of the Programme
The philosophy guiding this programme is founded on the belief that it is important to nurture a professional teacher who is ethical and of high integrity. This is the teacher who is dependable, committed and morally upright. In addition, this curriculum is guided by an appreciation of producing teachers who are critical in their thinking in response to the fast changing society and capable of making the appropriate choices, applying technology in teaching, mentoring and nurturing the learner to become a responsible member of the community. It is envisaged that this kind of a teacher will contribute positively in transforming the society at local, national, regional and global levels.
Rationale of the Programme
In line with the MDGs and the Kenya Vision 2030, access to quality and relevant education is key to meaningful social, economic and political development. The graduate teacher of this programme shall acquire knowledge, skills and value systems, necessary in a dynamic and competitive society. Further, the programme intends to produce a versatile, well-trained and innovative secondary school teacher, responsive to contemporary emerging challenges.

As a regional economic hub and a strategic centre for a host of international bodies and multinational organizations, Kenya has over fifty independent international schools that run purely international curricula. These curricula cater for educational needs of international and extra-territorial families and Kenyan families who want to pursue an international curriculum.
Most of the schools offer educational programmes that are easily transferable or equivalent to curricula offered in their respective countries. They include the British National Curriculum (BNC), International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE), General Certificate of Education (GCE), Common Entrance, International Baccalaureate (IB), American system, French educational system, German educational system, Swedish educational system and Japanese educational system among others.
Majority of teachers in these schools are expatriates. However, in the recent past, we have witnessed a good number of Kenyan teachers joining international schools and performing exceptionally well in the implementation of curricula on offer.
In response to this, Riara University has developed the Certificate in Teaching International Curricula as a way of equipping teachers in Kenya and beyond with skills necessary to implement international curricula locally, regionally or internationally.
