G34 – BACHELOR OF LAW(LL.B)

Entry Requirements
Candidates must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements.
Subject to the regulation above, no candidate shall be registered for the degree of Bachelor of Laws unless he/she has passed the Kenya Certificate of secondary Education (KCSE) examination with a minimum grade of B+ (B plus) in English.
Examinations Regulations
Evaluation consists of coursework, assignments, continuous assessment tests and written examinations.
Each unit is grade out of a maximum of 100 marks. Written examinations constitute 70% and
coursework 30% . The pass mark in each unit is 40%. The final award of the degree of Bachelor of Laws
in based on average score in all units taken for credit by a candidate in second, third and fourth years.
The council ;of Legal Education and the Law society of Kenya oversees the post graduation practical
training for graduates of law seeking to enter the legal profession as advocates of the Kenyan Bar.
Examinations Regulations
No candidate shall be admitted to an examination unless they have attended all prescribed courses of study for the requisite period.
All course units shall be examined during the semester in which they are offered and taken. Such examinations shall consist of coursework essays and end course written examinations.
In order to proceed to the next year of study a candidate shall be required to pass in at least ten of the twelve units offered and taken in the year of examination whether by ordinary or supplementary examinations.
No candidate shall be allowed to proceed to or remain in the fourth year of study unless they have obtained a pass mark in the third year Clinical Programme assignments either initially or on resubmission.
All examinations shall be governed by the following rules:
a) Each unit shall be graded out of a maximum of one hundred (100) marks
b) Written examinations shall constitute 70 per cent and course work assessments the remaining 30 per cent of the marks in each unit offered and taken in any semester.
c) The pass mark in each unit shall be 40 per cent.
d) A candidate who fails in a maximum of four units in the ordinary examinations taken in any year shall be required to sit supplementary examinations in the failed units within three months of the last ordinary examinations for that year.
e) A candidate who (i) fails in more than four units in the ordinary examinations taken in any year, or (ii) being required to sit, fails supplementary examinations, shall repeat the entire year of study.
f) A candidate who fails to attain the pass mark in seven or more units offered and taken in the ordinary examinations in any year shall be discontinued.
g) The final award of the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) shall:
h) be based on the average score in all the units taken by a candidate in the second, third and fourth years of study; and
i) be classified into First class (Honors), Second Class (Upper or Lower division) (Honors), and Pass.
j) Provided that no candidate shall qualify for the award of an honors degree who, by reason of the application of regulations has had to repeat the second, third and fourth years of study.
In coming to its decision as to the class of the degree to be awarded to a candidate the Board of Examiners shall have regard to the overall marks obtained by the candidate and shall apply the principles that an aggregate score of:
First Class Honors 70% and above
Second Class Honors (Upper Division) 60% – 69%
Second Class Honors (Lower Division) 50% – 59%
Pass 40% – 49%

UONBI School Of Law Undergraduate Admission

Entry Requirements
In addition to the common regulations for the Bachelors Degree for the University of Nairobi, eligible
candidates must have at least grade B (Plain) in English. Categories of persons to whom admission is
open include:
a) Holder of degree(s) from a recognized university
b) Holder of Advanced Level Certificate with at least three principal passes equivalent.
c) Holder of KCSE Certificate with minimum university entry points of at least C+.
d) Holders of at least a credit pass in a Diploma from a recognized institution in addition to KCSE
Certificate with a Mean Grade of at least C.

Course Structure and Duration
The Bachelor of Laws degree programme is both academic and practical in orientation. The teaching
methods applied include lectures, tutorials, group work and presentations. Clinical attachments and
links with the legal fraternity, industry and other law schools provide an important component. The
programme is organized into 67 units, 26 of which are core and 41 electives. To graduate, a candidate is
required to take and pass in a total of 48 units, 12 in each year of study, including all the core units.
