Introduction
The School of Nursing was launched in August 2011 under the auspices of the College of Health Sciences. The school started as a department of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences in 1998 with 20 students in BSc. Nursing. Master of Science in Nursing (MSc. N) in Maternal and Neonatal Health was introduced in September 2006 and has graduated 10 students to date. This is the second postgraduate nursing (MSc.N) in Kenya.
It values excellence and innovation in preserving and advancing the art and science of nursing in the scholarly domains of nursing education, practice and research. The values would be pursued through personal interactions and the integration of technology, while embracing cultural and academic diversity. Education for nursing should be value-focused, providing guidance for future practice, yet reality based to prepare practitioners for the current health care practices. - Mission
The Mission of the School of Nursing is to prepare innovative oriented graduate nurse leaders and scholars to practice professional nursing to meet the dynamic health care needs of all people, and to facilitate the education of students as lifelong learners in the art and science of nursing to provide ethical, holistic, culturally competent and population based care in the ever changing environment.
- Objectives
(a). To establish an institution for excellence in nursing education.
(b). To provide the atmosphere and opportunities for students to become excellent nurses who are self-oriented, motivated and responsible citizens.
(c). To empower the students confidence and a sense of responsibility to achieve academic and professional goals.
(d). To apply advanced scientific knowledge to the nursing field.
(e). To help the students practice and teach others principles of healthy living.
Departments
The School of Nursing comprises the following three (3) Departments:
- Department of Community Health, Nursing Administration, Education and Research.
- Department of Midwifery and Gender
- Department of Child, Adult and Mental Nursing
Master of Science in Maternal and Neonatal Health
This graduate degree program began in September 2006 indicating a remarkable growth of the Department of Nursing Sciences. The program is a clinical specialty that offers advanced skills in midwifery and neonatology among others. It comes handy in producing specialists and leaders who can promote quality reproductive health and advanced midwifery and neonatal services for women and their families through practice, training, research and advocacy.
Training in advanced midwifery and neonatology is an important input towards the process of ensuring ‘skilled care’, an important input towards alleviating maternal and neonatal mortality predominant in the developing world. The Kenya reproductive health care situation is wanting in ‘skilled care’ provision. According to the KDHS 2003, 88% of mothers attend antenatal services and only 40% deliver under skilled care. These further indicates the need for quality ‘skilled care’ in Kenya.
Admission Requirements
Common rules and regulations of Moi University apply and in addition the applicants for the programme must:
1. Be holders of the Bsc. Nursing degree of Moi University or its equivalent from recognized universities.
2. Be registered or eligible for registration as a nurse by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Duration
The program runs for a minimum of two (2) years of four (4) consecutive semesters of full time registration.
