KNEC Home – Details:

Establishment of Knec – 1980

KNEC was established under KNEC Cap 225A following breakup of the East African Community. The single system of education, the 7-4-2-3 was examined. Exams offered were East African Certificate of Primary Education (EACPE) East African Certificate of Education Examination (EACE) East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE).

Begining of 8-4-4 – 1985

8-4-4 system was adopted. CPE became KCPE while KCE became the KCSE. First KCPE Examinations are administered first time.

Harmonization – 1988

Sessional Paper No.6 of 1988 emphasized on coordination and harmonization of the examinations and certification of all national examinations for school and post school training institutions except the universities. It also adopted the exiting examination syllabuses and award regulations for the examinations. The EACPE became the Certificate of Primary education (CPE), the EACE became the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) and the EAACE became the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).Business and Technical Examinations are administered first time.

KCSE – 1989

First KCSE exam was held while last Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) held which KCSE replaced.

ECDE – 2007

ECDE Examinations are administered first time.

DTE & SNE – 2010

DTE & SNE Examinations are administered first time.

New Knec Act – 2012

KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012 replaces KNEC Cap 225A of 1980.

The Knec Gazette – 2015

KNEC Examinations Rules were gazetted.

Our Mandate

The mandate of KNEC is outlined in Section 10 of KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012 as to

  • Set and maintain examinations standards.
  • Conduct public academic, technical and other national examinations within Kenya at basic and tertiary levels
  • Award certificates or diplomas to candidates in such examinations. (Such certificates or diplomas, shall not be withheld from the candidate by any person or institution)
  • Confirm authenticity of certificates or diplomas issued by the Council upon request by the government, public institutions, learning institutions, employers and other interested parties.
  • Undertake research on educational assessment.
  • Advice any public institution on the development and use of any system or assessment when requested to do so, and in accordance with such terms and conditions as shall be mutually agreed between the Council and the public institutions.
  • Promote the international recognition of qualifications conferred by the Council.
  • Advice the Government on any policy decision that is relevant to, or has implications on the functions of the Council or the administration of examinations in Kenya.
  • Do anything incidental or conducive to the performance of the preceding functions.

Our Portals

We have different portals each examination has its own portal mostly for registration purposes. All examination centres are expected to log onto a platform for specific examination and enter the candidates’ details using the school/centre registration password.

The specific registration period for each examination shall be communicated separately through a circular. The dates must be adhered to since there will be no late registration of candidates.

Query Management Information System (QMIS)

The Query Management Information System (QMIS) is an electronic platform for online submission and processing of queries relating to examination results such as Certification of Examination Results for candidates who have lost their certificates, Confirmation of Examination Results and Equation of Foreign Qualifications.

Other queries handled by the system include:-

  1. Bio data amendments (name, photo, gender, year of birth, birth certificate number, citizenship, entry code.
  2. Direct Recoveries for KCPE/KCSE result slips, certificates and result printout.
  • Results (marks) queries i.e. absenteeism, missing marks and payment queries.

Below is a detailed schedule of the QMIS process:-

A client needs a computer/mobile phone with internet access.

  1. Use the web address https://qmis.knec.ac.ke to access the QMIS system;
  2. If  new, the  user is then prompted to register, a registered user however  logs in using their credentials;
  3. The Client then accesses the User Manual. The User can at this point identify the requirements relevant to his query and upload scanned copies of the requisite documents;
  4. They then make a payment of the amount as prompted by the system. Payments are by M-pesa;
  5. Upon successful processing of the query, KNEC, using the Client’s provided email or phone number, notifies them to collect their processed document(s). A client is at the point of collection required to avail original copies of the documents they had attached during the application process.

NB:  The Client username and password are confidential. Do not disclose these to a third party.  You MUST key in a valid email address and/or mobile phone number to receive feedback.

Query on Pending Results due to registration issues Query arising as a result of pending of a candidate’s results because the candidate did not provide the required details of previous KNEC examination at the time of registration.

Period Of launching queries after release of Results

The Kenya National Examinations Council allows thirty (30) days after the date  of release of the results/certificates for candidate(s) or institution(s) to raise any query arising from the released examination results/certificates.

Queries about examination results/certificates must be made through the Heads of Schools/Institutions and the Sub County Directors of Education. The appeal documents must reach KNEC not later than thirty (30) days after the release of the examination results/certificates, after which the query shall attract a penalty.

Charges on Queries after Release of Examination Results

Any amendment on name, gender and year of birth attracts a penalty of 3,000/= (three thousand) per candidate if the query is submitted after thirty (30) days after the date of release of examination results

The Head of Institution must request in writing explaining the origin of the error.

The Kenya National Examinations Council reserves the right to accept or reject a request for amendment(s)
