About KMTC Department of Environmental Health Science
he Department of Environmental Health is one of the largest departments within Kenya Medical Training College. It was established in 1947 by Mr F. C. Gaffney
It has a student population of 1300 at any one time, 88 teaching staff and about 30 no-teaching staff distributed in 13 constituent MTCs.
The main objective of the department is to prepare graduates for the health sector and the society who are able to carry out investigation, control, eliminate and prevent environmental health problems and their potential risks.
The role of the department is to train Public Health Officers [Environmental Health Officers] and Public Health Technicians to be change agents in the field of environmental health as part of the health sector main objective to promote and improve the health status of the Kenyan populations.
The efforts in this regard are directed towards controlling, preserving or improving the environment in order to achieve optimal health at individual, family and community levels.
In all programmes, the participants are assessed through coursework, final examination and research project paper done independently as a requirement of final qualifying examination as stipulated in various curricula in accordance to the college examination policy.
