About KMTC Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences
Training of Medical Laboratory Science professionals started at KMTC in 1945. The first cadre to be trained was Medical Assistants (Certificate Program). In 1965, Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences program started while higher diploma program was started in 1971.
At the department, the focus is on ensuring that when our students graduate they are well equipped to face the job market demands as they are trained by highly qualified and experienced lecturers and exposed to various practical sessions both at campuses through our well-equipped demonstration laboratories as well as the clinical sites in the various hospital and research laboratories in Kenya. Our reputation is well deserved and no one knows this better than those who have had the pleasure of working with our graduates.
Upon admission, you will be exposed to the exciting world of Medical Laboratory Sciences which involves the following fields:-
- Medical Microbiology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Haematology
- Histopathology and Cytology
- Blood Transfusion Sciences
- Immunology
- Parasitology and Entomology
- Medical Virology
One can progress from diploma, specialise in one of the eight fields at Higher Diploma or proceed to do a degree in Medical laboratory Sciences to Phd.
Our graduates work in hospital Laboratories both in private and public, research laboratories, manufacturing industries including the food industries. They are also in high demand both locally and internationally including the NGO world.
